Think Ahead..!!

When I realized what a fool I was, it was damn too late.
Well, it all started with me approaching my boss with superfull confidence and requesting him about how it would be wonderful if I could attend an Exhibition along with him where oil and gas companies from across the world had set up their stalls. Basically, this was a platform for all the oil and gas companies to get to know their competitors, deal with potential and existing customers, understand the current market trend etc., A very interactive setup.
To my surprise, he accepted my request as an affirmative. But he said that the GM of our company would join us too and so we all could go together. Now thats kinda pricky. All my confidence went to drain. Too many questions tormented me. How am I going to face the "big boy"? What am I supposed to tell him? How should I behave in front of him??
Getting back, when I realised what a fool I was, it was too late. The next thing I know my boss comes to me and says "Lets leave..!!"..I thought Of giving him excuses to drop out of the plan. What excuse can I use?..Never mind, as I was about to enter his car he gave me the happiest news that the "big boy" had an errand to attend and would be delayed!! What a relief I must say!!
The 2 hour drive to the Exhibition was fun-filled. I got to speak and learn a lot from my boss. He spoke to me about different projects he wanted me to start with. He also gave me advice on various other activities.
When I entered the exhibition hall, I was dumbstruck. To see soo many podiums and stalls of companies from around the world in one single exuberant hall was overwhelming!!
With my boss' consent, I took a stroll to find about the companies and their related products and services.
An inexperienced, with very little knowledge in the oil and gas related field I found myself totally left out in the midst of the experienced lot. I returned to my company's stall where all my colleagues were, with disappointment.
Then, one of my colleagues suggested me to check out the stalls of few turbine and compressors manufacturing companies. A huge model of a gas turbine was set up at one of the stalls. The turbine's cross section was displayed with main components like nozzles, compressor (centrifugal type), cooling air chamber, combustion chamber, motor etc. This made me realize though I have entered this industry newly, I am not an amateur. I do have knowledge about these.
With my boosted confidence I again started walking from stall to stall checking different types of waste water pumps, valves and fixtures, compressors, turbines of different sizes and shapes.
With every stall I checked, my energy was charged and I got to learn many things.
By the end of the evening, I decided to take incharge of the next exhibition that would be held after 2yrs when my company participates. To add up to my excitement, my boss encouraged me to take up individual projects that can boost decision making ability. He pointed out that with my presentation and technical skills, I can work towards becoming a product engineer. And as an Intellectual, Think Ahead.

  4. Wow! I'm impressed! I can sense your passion for your field. I loved the way you approached your boss. That was bold and that will take you places. And the thirst for more knowledge is making me want to learn about turbines and compressors and what not! :p
